Dr. Yusmarhaini Yusof is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work, Department of Psychology and Social Work, Universiti Utara Malaysia. She received her BA in Psychology and Master of Social Work (Interpersonal Practice & Mental Health) from the University of Michigan, Ann-Arbor, U.S.A, and PhD in Social Work from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom. Yusmarhaini's PhD study focused on therapists’ attachment styles and therapeutic alliance in family therapy under the supervision of Professor John Carpenter, Mr. Mark Rivett and Ms. Ailsa Cameron. Her interest in therapy and therapeutic alliance sparked when she was an intern completing her M.S.W training in an outpatient child and family mental health center in Ann-Arbor, Michigan, as well as her personal motivation as a mother of two daughters.
Prior to joining UUM, Yusmarhaini was an Officer at the Women’s Affairs Department Malaysia. In 1998, she received an acknowledgement certificate for her contribution in the “3rd International Steering Committee on the Economic Advancement of Rural Women,” held in Kuala Lumpur. In 2016, she went to Durham University as a Visiting Research Fellow. Yusmarhaini's specialization is in social work mental health and interpersonal practice. However, she is an avid writer with research interests in social work practice, therapists' attachment styles, therapeutic alliance, mental health, disability, and social justice issues. Yusmarhaini have written several SCOPUS/SSCI journal articles and co-authored two books published by UUM Press. She is also the author for 'Knowing the Self: Attachment and Therapeutic Alliance for Mental Health Professionals' published by Macmillan International Higher Education and Red Globe Press (the contract is now under Bloomsbury Publishing at https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/author/yusmarhaini-yusof/).
Yusmarhaini was the recipient of the Malaysian Public Service Department’s American Top Universities (ATU) scholarship and the 2007 recipient for the Malaysian Endeavour Award from the Australian Government. She can be contacted at yusmar@uum.edu.my.
