OVERVIEW
With a background in Geography and Environmental Science, I developed interest in various niches in tourism studies including social and historical aspects, geographic and environmental impacts, Islamic tourism and heritage management. As Editor-in-Chief of the Malaysian Management Journal, editorial board member and reviewer for several international journals, I acquired some appreciation of tourism discourses and epistemological issues surrounding tourism research, planning and management. I have published over sixty academic works, nearly all in single authorship, covering a wide range of subjects from infrastructure, history, geography, culture, education, heritage appreciation, pilgrimage and tourism management. These include over a dozen entries in six encyclopedias, and several commentaries and book reviews in local and international journals. Earlier on I was Associate Editor of the Routledge Encyclopedia of Tourism (2000) while translating a classic text in tourism studies by Mathieson and Wall, Tourism: Economic, Physical and Social Impacts (1982). I taught at several local and foreign universities namely UKM, UiTM, UUM, OhioU, UHawaii, UMassachusetts and Surrey. Currently I teach Tourism Geography for undergraduates and Academic Writing for graduates. In the area of consulting my contributions covered inputs to several international agencies including Asian Development Bank, UNDP, Peat Marvick and local agencies such as MIER, ISIS, Tourism Malaysia, State governments and the UKM Bureau of Research and Consultancy. Current research interests include heritage trails and border tourism, besides exploring student leadership and their English learning strategies in the university.
