OVERVIEW
I have an academic background in Development Economics and Resource Economics (Fisheries). My research focuses on the understanding of poverty and livelihoods with specific interest on the role of social capital and governance on poverty reduction. I am involved in research on the ecosystem based management of marine resources particularly to understand the implications of human, social and governance aspect in managing marine protected areas, the modification of sea bed and its impact on coral reefs, fisheries and other resources in coastal areas. I have received international research grants from EEPSEA (IDRC), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) for studies related to fisheries subsidy, marine resource management and agricultural practices in Malaysia. I have also received research grants from ministries and departments of Malaysia for conducting studies related to livelihoods of fishers in coastal areas, marine protected area management, aquaculture production and management, capacity utilization of marine fisheries, fleet dynamic management in fisheries, economic impact of artificial reefs, technical efficiency of fish hatcheries and nurseries, and modelling of agricultural commodities. My work on fisheries co-management, property rights, marine protected areas and livelihoods have been published in various journals, book, chapter in books and policy briefs. I have presented my work in international conferences.
