Associate Professor Dr. Awan binti Ismail (awan@uum.edu.my) is a distinguished academic at Universiti Utara Malaysia Kuala Lumpur (UUM KL). She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication with a specialization in Journalism from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), a Master of Science in Corporate Communication from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and a PhD in Media on Journalism Practices in Malaysia from The University of Adelaide, Australia.
Dr. Awan has a rich teaching portfolio, spanning both undergraduate and graduate levels, with a focus on journalism, broadcast journalism, and media studies. Her extensive research expertise includes early work on risk communication regarding smoking in print media, as well as studies on television viewership trends in Malaysia, political communication, journalism sustainability and the evolution of journalism education in the country.
With a professional background that includes experience as a journalist at Berita Harian, roles at Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Berhad (TV3), as a corporate and marketing executive at the Malaysia Institute of Integrative Media for eight years, Dr. Awan brings practical industry knowledge to her academic pursuits. She has over 25 years of teaching experience, having served as a part-time lecturer at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Kolej Yayasan Melaka (KYM), and Akademi TV3.
Dr. Awan is an active contributor to the academic community, having presented numerous papers at international conferences and led several research grants in media and journalism. She currently serves as a committee member for the Accreditation for the Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA) (MJA Arts) and as an Adjunct Professor for Communication at Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL). Additionally, she has conducted several workshops on media management and strategic media planning for government departments, further underscoring her leadership in the field.
