OVERVIEW
Abmalek F. Abubakar is currently a senior banking lecturer with the College of Business at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). He joined UUM in 2002 and was made Head of Banking Studies Department at the then Faculty of Finance and Banking from 2005 to 2007. In 2008 he was appointed as Deputy Director of the university’s Centre for University-Industry Link. Prior to joining the academia, Abmalek has over 20 years of banking experience in Malaysia and the Asean region. He started his working career with the Maybank Group in 1982 and subsequently moved up the ladder to become Chief Dealer & Treasury Manager from 1992 to 1995. Thereafter Abmalek was promoted as General Manager/CEO of Maybank Offshore in Labuan until 1998. During his tenure, Abmalek was also Chairman of the Association of 62 Offshore Banks in Labuan as well as a member of LOFSA's steering committee for the establishment of an International Islamic Money Market (IIMM). In the middle of 1998, Abmalek was seconded as Senior Vice President in charge of treasury, trade finance and correspondent banking at Maybank Jakarta. Two years later, he was appointed head of marketing with the bank’s Islamic Banking Division at its head office in Kuala Lumpur. Abmalek quit the banking industry in 2001. Presently, Abmalek facilitates graduate and undergraduate courses in treasury management, financial risk management, banking seminar and trade finance at UUM. He is also a resource speaker on treasury management, foreign exchange and money market operations, and financial risk management for the then Institute of Bankers Malaysia (IBBM0, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Bank Negara’s Financial Sector Talent Enrichment Program (FSTEP) and a number of Malaysian corporate organizations. Abmalek is a member of Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB) and has also been admitted as a member of Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) and International Council of Islamic Finance Educators (ICIFE).
