I am a discourse analyst and sociolinguist. My areas of specialisation include discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, language, religion and society, religious language, as well as sociology of language and religion. I started my career at UUM in 1997. Over the period of 27 years, I have conducted language, civilisation and philosophy courses at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. From October 2012 to September 2013, I was awarded a visiting fellowship by the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, University of Oxford, UK to conduct a research on philosophy of language comparison between the methodologies of 'ilm al-tafsir and critical discourse analysis. The research was an extension of my PhD thesis which won the Best PhD Thesis Award at the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin Thesis Awards 2010. I have been supervising a number of PhD students. I published a number of works in journals, books, chapters in books and proceedings related to my areas of specialisation. From 2012 to 2019, I have completed two Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FGRS) projects investigating the use of language in religious context and the application of forensic linguistics in detecting deviant teaching, and also a Trans Disciplinary Research Grant Scheme (TRGS) project examining inter-religious discourse in Malaysia. In 2016, I was appointed as a researcher by the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) to deliver the output of a policy paper on the history and epistemology of university in intellectual discourse. Since 2019 until now, I have been the fellow at King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID), Lisbon, Portugal, conducting two projects; the intellectualisation of the Malay language as a religious language in Malaysia (2019-2020), and the prevention of hate speech in Malaysia (2021-2022). In 2023, I was appointed as a visiting professor by Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, Indonesia.
