Nurwati Ashikkin holds a PhD in Accounting and Finance from the University of Stirling, Scotland, as well as a Master of Science degree specialising in Banking and Finance from the same university. She has successfully supervised five PhD students and one DBA student, and 13 master's students, while another five are in the process of completing their PhD and DBA studies. Her expertise has been sought by various higher institutions as evaluator for their post-graduate theses and as internal examiner in UUM. Her appointment as external examiner for PhD and Master’s candidates have come from Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), to name a few. Apart from that, she sits in various committees to provide feedback on PhD proposal defense and share her experience at PhD workshops and colloquiums.
Nurwati’s research interest is centered on Corporate Finance topics, such as initial public offerings, capital market and corporate governance. She also has research interest in Financial Reporting topics, such as earnings management and corporate disclosure. Her main objective in carrying out research is to produce high-quality work that makes significant contributions to the areas of accounting and finance. Her excellence in research and publication has made her the recipient of several awards, both locally and internationally, including: Best Publication in Journal (ISI/SCOPUS/ERA) Award (2012) and University Publication Incentive Award (2012-2016) by UUM; Outstanding Paper Award Winner: 2011 Awards for Excellence by Emerald Literati Network; Research Award by Social Science Research Network (SSRN) as 'Top Ten Download List'; Malaysian Outstanding Research Paper in Accounting Award (MORPA 2009) as First Prize Winner for Financial Accounting and Reporting Category; and Best Paper Award and Best Poster Award in Research Conference and Seminar. Her article published in the International Journal of Accounting (A-rated journal in the field of accounting) has been reported as the 'Most Downloaded Article' from June 2011 to March 2012. Another article, which was also published in an A-rated journal in the field of finance (Journal of Business Finance & Accounting), has been highlighted as, 'Most Read Article' from June 2008 until January 2011.
She has published in leading accounting and finance journals, including the Journal of Business Finance & Accounting (ISI-Indexed, Association of Business Schools (ABS) list 3); International Journal of Accounting (Scopus-Indexed, ABS list 3); Review of Accounting and Finance (Scopus-Indexed, ABS list 2); and International Journal of Managerial Finance (Scopus-Indexed, ABS list 2). She has also published articles in regional accounting and finance journals, such as the Asian Review of Accounting (Scopus-Indexed, ABS list 2); International Journal of Economics and Management (Scopus-Indexed); and Asian Academy of Management Journal of Accounting and Finance (Scopus-Indexed).
